How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram (Safely, Without Apps)
By InstantFollowerTracker.com Team · Updated · 7 min read

Instagram is quick to tell you when someone new follows you. It says nothing at all when someone leaves. Your follower count simply drops by one, and there's no built-in list of who unfollowed you.
That silence is exactly why "unfollower apps" are so popular. Unfortunately, most of them ask for your Instagram password, which is risky (more on that below). The good news: with a free Instagram follower tracker that reads the data Instagram already gives you, you can see who unfollowed you safely, without sharing your password.
This guide covers three methods, from the most reliable to the most manual, plus how to read the results correctly so you don't jump to conclusions.
Why Instagram doesn't show unfollowers
Instagram has never offered an unfollow notification, and it's unlikely to add one. Unfollowing is designed to be a quiet, low-drama action. If people knew every unfollow would be announced, many would feel pressured to keep following accounts they're no longer interested in, which isn't great for the feed or for the people involved.
So any method for spotting unfollowers works the same way under the hood: take a snapshot of your followers, take another one later, and compare them. Anyone missing from the second list has unfollowed you (or left Instagram). The difference between methods is only how you take those snapshots.
| Snapshot 1 (Oct 1) | Snapshot 2 (Oct 15) | Result |
|---|---|---|
| @alex | (missing) | Unfollowed you |
| @bea | @bea | Still follows you |
| (missing) | @fin | New follower |
Method 1: Use an Instagram follower tracker with your data export (recommended)
Instagram lets every user download a copy of their account information, including a complete list of followers and accounts you follow. This is the most accurate source available, because it comes straight from Instagram.
Step 1: Request your first followers file
PathProfile☰ MenuAccounts CenterYour information and permissionsDownload your information
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the ☰ menu, then Accounts Center.
- Tap Your information and permissions → Download your information.
- Choose Download or transfer information, select your Instagram account, then Some of your information.
- Check Followers and following and choose Download to device.
- Set Date range: All time and Format: JSON, then tap Create files.
Instagram will notify you when the file is ready, usually within minutes to a few hours. Our full walkthrough, with fixes for common problems, is here: How to download your Instagram followers data.
Step 2: Upload it to create a baseline
Open the follower tracker and drop in the ZIP file. You'll immediately see who doesn't follow you back, your fans and your mutuals. In the background, the tracker saves this list of followers on your own device as your first snapshot.
Step 3: Repeat later and compare
After a few days or weeks, request a fresh export the same way and upload it again. The tracker compares it with your previous snapshot and shows:
- Who unfollowed you since the last check
- Who started following you in the same period
- How your follower count has changed across every check
Because the processing happens in your browser, your follower list is never sent to a server. You can delete the saved history at any time.
How often should you check?
For most personal accounts, once every two to four weeks is plenty. Creators and businesses running campaigns might check weekly to see how a particular post or collaboration affected their audience. Checking daily rarely tells you anything useful and can make the numbers feel more dramatic than they are.

Open the Instagram Follower TrackerMethod 2: Check your followers list manually
If you only care about a few specific people, you can check by hand:
- Go to your profile and tap Followers.
- Use the search bar to type the person's username.
- If they don't appear, they no longer follow you (or their account is gone).
You can also check from their side: open their profile, tap Following, and search for your username.
This works for one or two accounts, but it doesn't scale. If you have hundreds of followers, there's no practical way to spot who's missing by scrolling. That's what Method 1 solves.
Method 3: Track your follower count with Insights
If you have a professional (Creator or Business) account, Insights shows how your follower count changes over time, including follows and unfollows per day. It won't tell you who unfollowed, but it does tell you when. That's useful for linking a drop to a specific post, story or change in posting schedule.
Pair Insights with Method 1: when you spot an unusual dip, download a fresh export to see exactly which accounts left. Our guide to tracking Instagram follower growth over time covers this workflow in detail.
Why you should avoid "who unfollowed me" apps
Search the app store for "Instagram unfollowers" and you'll find dozens of apps. Most of them work by logging in to your account with your username and password, then repeatedly pulling your follower list.
Data export method
- No password shared
- Data comes straight from Instagram
- Nothing touches your account
- Free and unlimited
Typical unfollower app
- Asks for your Instagram login
- Automated activity can get you restricted
- Results often inaccurate
- May sell or misuse your data
That creates real problems:
- You hand over full account access. Anyone with your password can read your DMs, post as you and change your recovery email.
- Instagram may flag your account. Automated activity from third-party servers looks like bot behavior and can lead to "We suspect automated behavior" warnings, temporary action blocks or worse.
- Many apps are data businesses. Some resell follower data or use your account to follow other accounts and like posts.
Instagram itself warns against giving your login to third-party apps and recommends changing your password if you already have. We go deeper in Are Instagram unfollower apps safe?
How to read your unfollower results correctly
Not everyone who disappears from your list made a conscious choice to unfollow you. Before you take anything personally, consider these possibilities.
The account was deactivated or deleted
When someone temporarily deactivates their account, they vanish from all follower lists until they come back. Deleted accounts disappear permanently. Both look exactly like unfollows in a comparison.
They changed their username
Follower exports identify accounts by username. If @sara.travels becomes @sara.makes.films, the comparison will show one "unfollower" and one "new follower". If you see a new follower who looks very familiar, this is probably what happened.
Instagram removed the account
Instagram regularly removes spam and fake accounts. If you suddenly lose a batch of followers with random-looking usernames, it's likely a cleanup, not people rejecting your content. See Why is my Instagram follower count going down? for the full list of causes.
They blocked you or you removed them
If someone blocked you, they also disappear from your followers. And if you removed a follower yourself, they'll show as gone too.
Quick check: tap the username in your results. If the profile shows "User not found" or "Sorry, this page isn't available", the account is gone or has blocked you. If the profile loads and the Follow button says "Follow back", they genuinely unfollowed you.
What to do after you find your unfollowers
Knowing who unfollowed you is useful information. What you do with it is up to you. Some practical, low-drama options:
- Do nothing. People unfollow for all kinds of reasons: they're cleaning up their feed, their interests changed, or they followed you during a giveaway. It's rarely personal.
- Review your following list. If people you follow have unfollowed you, you might decide to unfollow them too. Our guide on finding who doesn't follow you back shows how to do this in bulk.
- Look for patterns. If unfollows spike after a certain type of post, that's honest feedback about what your audience wants.
- Focus on the people who stay. A smaller, engaged audience beats a large, passive one. Our guide to growing real followers covers what actually works.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify someone if I check whether they follow me?
No. Searching someone's followers or following list, or viewing their profile, never sends them a notification.
Can I see who unfollowed someone else?
No. The data export only includes your own account. Tools that claim to show another person's unfollowers depend on scraping Instagram, which breaks Instagram's terms and is unreliable.
Why are my results different from an unfollower app's?
Apps that scrape Instagram often miss accounts, hit rate limits or count deactivated accounts differently. Your official export is the most complete record Instagram provides of your followers on the day you downloaded it.
Can I see who unfollowed me in the past, before I started tracking?
Not exactly. The export shows who follows you now, so you need at least two snapshots to see who left. The sooner you take your first snapshot, the sooner you can track changes.
